Have you noticed the beginnings of frown lines between your eyebrows? Maybe you catch a fleeting glimpse of these lines when you make certain facial expressions, or perhaps your brow has taken on a more furrowed appearance overall. It’s completely normal to develop a furrowed brow or frown lines as you age. Luckily, if you start early, there are a few things you can do to prevent furrows from worsening over time.
Wear Sunglasses
Your brow catches a lot more sunlight than the rest of your face. Over time, this increased exposure to UV can cause your skin to develop fine line and wrinkles. If you want to keep furrowed brows from worsening, reducing your exposure to sunlight is key.
If you’re not already in the habit of wearing sunglasses, it’s time to start. Look for a pair with sufficiently large lenses so they shield your brows effectively. Keep an extra pair in your car or bag so you always have them on-hand. Also, make sure you choose sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays; some fashion sunglasses do not.
Use a Good Moisturizer
Moisturizer is the key to preventing wrinkles and fine lines all over the face. Unfortunately, some people don’t moisturize their brows as well as the rest of their skin. Pay closer attention to this area when you moisturize. You may even want to apply a second drop of moisturizer to your brows, specifically, after you’ve moisturized the rest of your face.
The moisturizer you use matters, too. Look for one that contains peptides, ceramides, and vitamin E, all of which impart deep moisture and may help keep furrows from worsening. If you have sensitive skin, avoid moisturizers that contain added scents and coloring agents.
Avoid Smoking
Smoking tobacco can lead to a loss of collagen. When the skin above your eyebrows loses collagen, your brow furrows become deeper and more obvious. So, if you’re not a smoker, this is definitely not a good time to start!
If you do smoke tobacco, quitting could help keep your furrowed brows and frown lines from worsening. Quitting is not easy, but joining a support group, using nicotine patches, or chewing nicotine gum can help. Be patient with yourself. Even if you’re only able to reduce your tobacco use at first, that’s a good start.
Get Plenty of Rest
When you’re stressed out or tired, you likely make a scowling or frowning face. If you do this too often, it can cause your brow furrows to deepen and worsen. So, you want to make sure you’re getting plenty of rest and working to reduce your stress levels, overall.
Try going to bed a half hour sooner than you usually do. If you have time to sleep in, take advantage of the opportunity. Finally, consider adding some yoga or meditation to your routine. Both practices can really help relax your mind, which makes it much easier to keep your face relaxed.
Consider Neurotoxin Injections
Neurotoxins, like Botox and Dysport, have been around for years. When injected beneath the skin, these neurotoxins temporarily paralyze the muscles that move the skin. This helps ease the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as brow furrows and frown lines.
Many people with minor brow furrows shrug off neurotoxins as an option; they think these treatments are only for severe cases. But that could not be further from the truth! If you get Botox early when your furrows are just starting to form, you can actually help keep the furrows from worsening. By preventing your skin from moving into the frowned or wrinkled shape, these injections can help in both the long-term and the short-term.
Neurotoxin injections are minimally invasive, and side effects are rare. You should only need to repeat the injections every ew months to keep your brow furrows from worsening.
