If you’re at all interested in skincare, you’ve probably heard of microneedling. It’s a treatment everyone seems to be talking about, from beauty bloggers to med spa practitioners.
But why is microneedling so popular? The short answer is “it works.”
The somewhat longer answer is that it addresses a long list of skin concerns at their source – all with minimal discomfort. At Balance MedSpa, we love microneedling as a treatment for acne scars, sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, and more.
Today, we’re here to answer some common questions about this oh-so-popular procedure.
What Is Microneedling?
As the name suggests, microneedling involves the use of “micro,” or very small, needles. Your practitioner will use a specialized tool, fitted with dozens of tiny needles, to puncture the outermost layers of your skin. The tiny wounds created by the needles stimulate the skin’s natural healing process.
Part of that healing process is the production of more collagen, a protein that gives your skin elasticity and tone. This collagen boost is what helps reduce scarring, even out your skin tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
While microneedling isn’t entirely painless, we make sure it’s as comfortable as possible for our clients.
Before we begin the procedure, we apply a topical numbing agent to your skin. Once this topical anesthetic takes effect, you’ll barely feel a thing as the needles are inserted. Some clients say they feel a mild pinching or poking sensation, but they find it very tolerable. Plus, microneedling doesn’t take very long, especially if you’re only having a few specific scars or problem areas treated.
What Happens After Treatment?
You can go right back to work or resume your normal routine after a microneedling treatment. Some of our clients even have their treatment on their lunch break! You will need to stay out of the sun, avoid using harsh cleansers, and keep your skin moisturized as you recover.
After microneedling, your skin will be red, inflamed, and sensitive. Thankfully, these side effects clear up within a few days. They’re just temporary signs that your skin’s healing process has begun. Once the redness clears, you should begin noticing improvements in your skin tone and texture. Those effects should continue to become more and more noticeable in the following weeks as your skin produces more collagen.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Microneedling?
Microneedling is a great choice for clients who have skin concerns that aren’t responding to over-the-counter or prescription creams and topicals. It’s also great for clients who want to address multiple skin concerns with one treatment, and for those seeking to avoid more invasive procedures like cosmetic surgery.
Here are some of the most popular skin problems we manage with microneedling:
- Age spots
- Sun spots
- Fine lines
- Mild to moderate wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Acne or surgical scars
Microneedling works well for clients of all ages, from 20-somethings dealing with acne scars to 45+ clients seeking fine lines treatment. There are only a few clients for whom microneedling is not a good choice: Namely, those with current acne breakouts, recent sunburns, or active skin infections. If we discover any of these underlying concerns during your consultation, we can often suggest a comprehensive treatment plan to address them and then revisit microneedling as an option down the road.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
We can perform microneedling practically anywhere on the body. It can be used to treat stretch marks and surgical scars almost anywhere they might appear. However, most treatments are performed on the facial skin. This anti-aging treatment works well for fine lines and other skin concerns around the mouth, between the eyes, across the forehead, and between the eyebrows.
How Many Treatments Do You Need?
While you’re likely to notice an improvement after just one treatment, most clients need three to five treatments to see maximum results from microneedling. We’ll suggest a customized treatment schedule based on your unique skin concerns, their severity, your goals, and your own healing rate.
We often have clients schedule their first session early in the fall. After a summer in the hot sun, it can be the perfect skin rejuvenation option. Then, we’ll follow up with a couple more treatments throughout the fall, and you’ll be looking your best by the winter holidays.
