Brow furrows are a natural effect of aging but may be exacerbated by things like heredity, frequent squinting, and chronic stress or worry.
Fortunately, there are a range of procedures that help to reduce or eliminate brow furrows. These lines come in two forms. The lines between the eyebrows tend to be vertical (up/down), while those above the brows (called glabellar lines) run horizontally (side to side).
How To Get Rid of Brow Furrows
The combination of reduced collagen production (a natural, age-related change) and gravity diminishes skin elasticity. The less elastic skin becomes, the more you’ll notice it sags, wrinkles, and puckers. Brow furrows result from this time-related change in skin tone and texture. However, muscle memory, habitual expressions, smoking, and sun damage also play a role.
For example, people who tend to squint, frown, or chronically worry typically have deeper and more dramatic brow lines than those who don’t. If you’ve spent time in the sun without proper sun protection, you’ll probably have more wrinkles than if you took precautions. And healthy lifestyle choices also impact skin elasticity.
That’s why we take a comprehensive and multi-layered approach to reduce brow furrowing and other fine lines and wrinkles.
1. Start From the Inside Out
Your diet and mindset are the foundations of a more youthful appearance. We recommend clients honor the tenets of a Mediterranean diet, which supports collagen production and whole-foods-based nourishment.
Along with a healthy diet, we recommend:
- Focusing on foods and ingredients that boost collagen naturally.
- Speaking to your physician or esthetician about collagen supplementation.
- Getting moderate exercise for 30 minutes a day, at least five times per week (resistance and weight-bearing exercises promote bone mass, which encourages more collagen production).
- Keep hydrated with water (infuse it with fruits or herbs for better flavor and a natural vitamin boost).
- Visit your optometrist annually to ensure up-to-date vision prescriptions, eliminating unconscious squinting.
- Practice yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, keeping a gratitude journal, or anything else that helps you relax more and worry less!
This inner foundation supports the following procedures to ease a furrowed brow. These procedures range from what you can do at home to MedSpa-based procedures requiring a trained clinician’s touch.
2. Your Daily Skincare Routine
Every day brings a new opportunity to use high-quality, clinically tested skin care products that support anti-aging results, boost collagen production, and protect your skin from environmental elements.
The tenets of a basic skincare routine include:
- Cleansing
- Exfoliating
- Moisturizing
- At-home retinol or similar treatments
However, all skin is created differently, and there are very few “one-stop products” for all skin types. Scheduling a consultation or a signature facial is the best way to get highly-personalized and customized skin care recommendations.
3. Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are deeper, more comprehensive exfoliating treatments performed by a certified dermatologist or licensed esthetician. Using treatment combinations specifically tailored to your skin type and goals, chemical peels remove the outer layer of skin.
This allows for new skin regeneration, erasing layers of facial lines and wrinkles and restoring younger, smoother skin. While we perform chemical peels, we recommend exploring microneedling, which has similar effects but stimulates deeper into the skin layers.
4. Microneedling
Microneedling is the latest “favorite treatment’ on the skin treatment block. Your esthetician uses a special tool equipped with tiny needles that she guides across the surface of your face.
The microneedling process leverages the body’s natural abilities to heal itself by creating fine punctures across the skin’s surface. However, unlike chemical peels that address the uppermost layer of skin, the needles reach through the epidermis and the dermal layer.
This stimulates healing – including collagen results for more dramatic, longer-term outcomes. Most clients return every three to four weeks for a series of sessions to optimize skin rejuvenation. In addition to erasing brow furrows, microneedling is also used to treat:
- Acne and other scars
- Hyperpigmentation
- Mottled skin tone/texture
- Rosacea
- Other wrinkles and fine lines
5. Injectables and Fillers
Sessions, including injectables and dermal fillers, are another popular and fast way to eliminate brow wrinkles. Botox is commonly used to treat brow lines and furrows because it paralyzes the muscles below, stopping the creases from appearing. This is a good option if unconscious facial expressions – like concentrated squinting or frowning – are a predominant source of the lines.
Age-related brow furrows and other facial lines can also be treated using dermal fillers – like hyaluronic acid – that fill and plump areas that are sagging or have lost volume over time.
6. Lasers and Other Cosmetic Devices
Lasers, radiofrequency, and similar treatments are additional skin resurfacing options that successfully reduce brow furrowing by eliminating outer skin layers, triggering the regeneration of fresher, younger skin. These processes are advanced treatments using highly-specialized equipment.
