When you look at your forehead in the mirror, are you bothered by deep, horizontal lines that run across it? These wrinkles are often known as a furrowed brow.
It’s not at all uncommon for people to develop a furrowed brow as they age. But while this is a common sign of aging, it’s not a very welcome one. Furrowed brows can not only make you look older, but also grumpy or angry. After all, people furrow their brows when they feel negative emotions. It’s not fun to walk around knowing that you always look a bit angry.
Luckily, there are several ways to treat and manage a furrowed brow, and many of them are non-invasive or minimally invasive.
Botox
Especially in their early stages, furrowed brows are a type of dynamic wrinkle. This is another way of saying the wrinkles appear, or at most apparent, when you move your face or make certain expressions. Your forehead may still look smooth when you’re looking straight ahead with a blank expression. But then, when you smile or frown, the wrinkles appear.
If your brow furrows are mostly dynamic, then Botox is a good treatment to consider. When your practitioner injects Botox beneath your skin, it temporarily paralyzes the small muscles in that area. Then, when you smile or frown, the muscles in your forehead will move a lot less. This makes your eyebrow furrows much less apparent.
Contrary to popular belief, Botox won’t make you look “plastic” or puffy. Your practitioner will be careful to use just enough to ease the appearance of wrinkles without completely freezing your facial expressions. Having Botox treatments in the early stages of eyebrow furrowing may help keep the wrinkles from worsening, so you’re less likely to need more extensive treatments later on.
Dermal Fillers
As they continue to progress, brow furrows start to become apparent even when you’re not moving your face or making certain expressions. At this stage, they are said to be “static” wrinkles.
Neurotoxins, like Botox, do little to ease the appearance of static wrinkles. However, there is another kind of injections that can help erase these more serious furrows: dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers are an entire class of injectables that essentially work by filling in the space in and under your skin. In other words, they make your skin look fuller and more plump, which in turn makes wrinkles less obvious. Some dermal fillers contain collagen or cause your skin to produce more collagen. Others contain hyaluronic acid, a substance your skin makes naturally, and which gives skin a plump appearance.
Your med spa practitioner can recommend the best dermal filler for your furrows. Here are a few common options:
- Juvederm: Juvederm makes a variety of fillers that are specialized to treat different parts of the face. Juvederm Vollure XC is a common choice for furrowed brows.
- Radiesse: This filler is designed to treat moderate and severe wrinkles.
- Restylane: Made with hyaluronic acid, Restylane can be used to smooth wrinkles and add volume to skin.
Infini Treatments
If you’d rather avoid injections, another treatment to consider is Infini. This is a treatment that combines microneedling and radiofrequency (RF). Tiny needles are inserted into your skin, and then radiofrequency waves are transmitted through them.
Infini treatment works by stimulating your body’s own collagen-producing systems. The radio waves cause intense vibrations within your skin cells, which encourages the skin to make more collagen. Your skin also makes collagen as it heals the tiny wounds created by the needles themselves. The increase in collagen production that occurs in the weeks and months following an Infini treatment will make your brow furrows less obvious.
Most people need a few Inifini treatments to thoroughly address their brow furrows and other wrinkles. Luckily, you can expect only mild soreness and redness as you recover from each one.
Collagen Supplements
In addition to pursuing the treatments above, you may also want to start taking collagen supplements. Collagen supplements alone are unlikely to erase your brow furrows. However, taking collagen supplements helps ensure your body has the “building blocks” it needs to form new collagen after a med spa treatment like Infini.
There are a lot of collagen supplements on the market, and some are better than others. Here are some key features to look for in a safe, effective collagen supplement:
- Label includes a detailed ingredient list
- Product has been lab-tested for purity
- Recommended by doctors and medical professionals
